Our vision for the teaching and learning of Mathematics here at Perry Hall is to instil an enjoyment and curiosity about mathematics in our world. The context of our school is one of economic diversity and so we have created a Mathematics curriculum which is engaging and relevant, and highly ambitious for all learners. Following a mastery approach, we equip our children with a depth and range of knowledge and skills needed now and in the future.
Our aim is that all pupils: become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately, can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios, and can reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.
Our school’s curriculum planning for Mathematics is steadily progressive and carefully sequences knowledge, concepts and procedures to build mathematical knowledge and skills systematically, and over time. Breadth and depth are prioritised over acceleration - giving our children the confidence to build on skills already learnt. Our aim is not to rush through the curriculum but to move on when the majority of children have grasped the concept to a good depth of understanding. We firmly believe that deep learning takes longer but lasts longer.
